To execute this operation ,an internal combustion engine requires a cylinder with smooth piston in it ,inlet and exhaust valve, a spark plug for petrol engine. The piston in the cylinder can move freely as possible so that the end of the crank shaft produces an rotational motion. Petrol or diesel engine , it takes four cycle of operation to produce one powerful and successful stroke . First stroke is the Intake stroke, in this step the piston moves downwards with opening at the inlet valve, so that air and tiny drop of gasoline get inside the cylinder. When it reaches the bottom , inlet valve closes and the next stroke begins. In Compression stroke, the piston compresses the air and gas mixture in order to ignite it. When the piston just reaches top of the cylinder, spark plug ignites the mixture. During the power stroke cycle, piston is forced downwards at a greater action of force. When mixture is completely burnt, piston moves upwards with an opening at the outlet valve. Hence, these linear motion is converted into rotational motion with help of a crank shaft, the rotational is transmitted to the wheels on the ground to move the vehicle.
