Why Do Our Nails Grow?

Nails are formed in a place called the nail root. They are being formed all the time. Slowly they are pushed out from the root and this is where they grow. We have nails to protect the tops of our fingers. Nails grow about .04 inch (1 mm) in about 10 days. Children nails grow faster than grow-ups', and everyone's nails grow faster in hot weather than when it's cold. If we don't keep our nails cut short, they will break, and they can scratch, too. Also it is base to get dirt under our nails. That is unhealthy. So when our nails start to get long, cut them short. And always keep our nails clean. Nails are formed from skin that has hardened. The part of the nail buried under the skin where the nail is formed is called the root, and the part that grows out is called the body of the nail. The nail is till soft when it is formed at the root but hardens as its emerges. Where the nail emerges is a white crescent. This shows where the nail is still semi-hard.
