An air conditioner has the same kind of machinery a refrigerator has. But instead of chilling the air inside a box, it chills the air in the whole room. It works by pulling in air, then cooling it and blowing it back out. When a liquid turns to a vapour, it pulls the heat from its surroundings. Air conditioners and refrigerators both work on those principle. they use a gas called Freon, which can change easily back an forth. In liquid form Freon changes quickly to a gas when released into a large chamber, the condenser. That pulls heat from the air around it. Then it is pumped back through a compressor, which squeezes it back to liquid form and takes out the heat. That is why the outdoor pat of an air conditioner and back of a refrigerator always discharge heat: it is the hot air from the compressor.
