Birds like chickens, sparrows and crows can't see on a dark night. such birds would bump into things if they flew at night, so they roost quietly. Most birds are commonly believed to suffer from night-blindness, but in fact there are quite a lot of birds that can see at night. Birds that cannot see in the dark have fewer of the rods that ae sensitive to light and dark in their retinas. Birds that can see in the dark find it safer to move around at night, so they spend their days drowsing in the shade and search for food after dark. Many migrating birds also fly at night and sleep in the daytime. Birds like Whippoorwills fly around during the night catching insects in their great big mouths.
I think that reason is enough for chicken, sparrows and crows not to fly/roam during nights.
