Tortoise


Tortoise comes under the reptile family which can survive in both land and seawater. It can even live in extreme desert conditions also. These reptile are found to be older that is more than 250 million years older than from its ancient group like snakes and lizards. The life expectancy of this animal can range from few days to many years. Putting them into years , about 70 years for aquatic species and up to 150 years for land tortoises. One of the scientists from England found that a turtle which had lived for about 188 years, considered to be the maximum life attained. Turtles, tortoises and terrapins are other names used for these animals. These names are classified according to their differences in the species and the way they live in different environments. At present, there are about 250 species. It has 13 groups of family including from its origin. Since there are many varieties of species, leather black turtle which has shell length up to 8 feet or 2.4 meters and on the other hand bog turtle, shell length about 3 to 4.5 inches. The weight of an turtle starting from the heaviest 1800 pounds to lightest 5 ounces. They can lay 100 or more eggs depending on the species. A unique feature about these turtle is that, it has a hard shell growing from their ribs. This hard shell helps themselves from their predators, when they prone to attack.
