They can't get oxygen from the water the way fish can. If the sea turtle's eggs hatched in the water the baby turtles would drown right away. In fact if a sea turtle laid her eggs in the sea, they would die even before they could hatch. That would happen because even the eggs need air to breathe. So that's why sea turtles leave the water to lay their eggs. Sea turtles are air-breathing reptiles. If their eggs hatched under water the baby turtles would drown. Actually, however, they could not hatch there, because the eggs must breathe through their shells. Also there would not be enough heat for them to develop under water. For these reasons the sea turtle must come up onto dry land to lay its eggs.
