The mistletoe, for one, sends roots into other trees. It grows by taking water and food from the tree it has joined. It also makes its own food, but never enough. That's why if the tree that the mistletoe is joined to dies, the mistletoe also dies. In many parts of the world mistletoe is used as a Christmas decoration. Plants that attach themselves to other plants or trees and take nutrients from them are called parasites. Among them are those like the mistletoe, which have green leaves and produce some nutrients themselves, and those like the scrub oak, broom rape and dodder, which make nothing themselves. All die when the host tree dies. The dodder sends out many tendrils in search of new hosts. It can greatly damage other plant life.
