Soft focus does not mean out of focus, nor does it mean poor focusing because of a cheaply made lens. What it means is the softening of the bitingly sharp detail rendered when a lens ids accurately focusing on a subject. The easiest way to produce the effect is to buy one of the specially made soft focus attachments, which look just like filters and fit on to the front of camera lens. It is not difficult to make our own assortment of soft focus filters. Begin by obtaining some glass blanks which will fit easily over our lens. Some photographers produce a soft focus effect by smearing a trace of Vaseline on to a plain glass filter. Soft focus is essentially a light and airy effect, and for that reason it looks best on pictures taken in flat frontal lighting-dark shadows caused by strongly directional lighting are not in keeping with the mood. The typical soft focus picture is rather pale and pastel looking-a charming effect. But it is best to begin with pale colors anyway, for strong colors will just look washed out and degraded.
