You can make both animal and human figures with clay. Since a body is made up of many parts, first learn the right order for putting a figure together. Try to construct an animal that looks like it's the real thing. Modeling clay is one of the most valuable educational materials children of all ages can play with. As they mature they are able to attempt increasingly more difficult techniques. Small children are content to work with clay using only their hands and primarily are concerned only with the general shape of things. As they grow older and learn to use such tools as a putty knife they can create more detailed forms. Older children can begin projects by first building a wire frame over which a figure can be sculpted using a clay mound on a baseboard. In addition to the recreational benefits of working with clay, children acquire an understanding of the shape of human and animal bodies.
