The answer depends on where we live. In most countries we drive on the right side of the road. But in some countries we drive on the left. The custom of driving on the right in the United States developed before the advent of the automobile when certain kinds of carts and wagons had a place on the left for the driver to sit. To see other drivers it was necessary to drive on the right. Thus when automobiles were first built in the United States steering wheels were put on the left, and rule of traffic keeping to the right continued. Since so many cars were built in America, many countries followed this practice. Some countries, however, opted for the British tradition in which the traffic stays on the left.
