Cats love to be stroked. When we stroke them they purr, and the sound seems to come from deep in their throats. That's because they're saying that it feels good. And if we stop stroking them they will come and rub themselves against us and purr to tell us not to stop. Purring is the cat's way of getting us to pet it. When cats purr it generally means that they are feeling happy and contented. They probably have much the same feeling that we have when we are talking happily with some of our friends or neighbours. Kittens first start to purr about the time that they begin drinking milk from their mother. It is believed that purring in adult cats is a transfer to their human owners of the expression of affection that they learnt as kittens.
