Many hares have fur that's brown in summer but white in winter. Snow falls in winter and everything is covered in white. With white fur it's easier for a hare to hide from its enemies. In summer it's easier for the hare to hide if it has brown fur. And that's the reason that the coat changes color. Hares living in color areas have white fur in the winter and darker, usually grayish brown, fur in the summer. In warmer parts of the world hares are usually gray brown all year round. The winter coat apperar white because each hair becomes hollow and fills with air. With air filling its centre the hair reflects light and also provides insulation that conserves heat and keeps the animal warm.
