The secret is that you must be carefully balanced and keep your bicycle moving forwards when you ride it. If you stop moving, the bicycle cannot be balanced. When it first appeared at about the end of the 18th century the bicycle was primitive. It was little more than a pair of stilts with two wooden wheels. The rider sat astride it and pushed his feet against the ground. Later two handlers were added, allowing the from wheel to be steered, pedals to drive the rear wheel and several other refinements were made, eventually producing the bicycle of today. Bicycles have a very high center of gravity, and so they are inherently unstable. When stopped, a bicycle falls to the side where the weight is greater. It doesn't fall when in motion because the centrifugal force created by pedaling and the handler's movement prevent it.
