The kingfisher is a bird that catches fish for food. Hovering above water, it looks for small fish. When it sees something it likes it folds its wings back and dives into the water. Under the water it quickly uses its beak to catch the fish. The kingfisher can hover in midair. When it spots a fish it wants it dives into the water. When it hits the water the two wings are folded back into a wedge. The shape minimizes water resistance so the force of the dive is not dissipated. The moment it grabs the fish in its beak it spreads its wings which act as a brake to stop the dive. While the bird is under the water its eyes are covered by protective membranes.
