A lens has two important measurements which immediately tell an experienced photographer quite a lot about it. the first is its focal length; the second is its maximum aperture. The maximum aperture is simply the widest opening your lens can make available for light to pass through. Both focal length and lens aperture are engraved on the front of a lens; for example, 50mm and f/2. A large lens aperture will be an advantage in two special circumstances. First it will help us to take pictures in low light levels without having 4oto use too slow a shutter speed; secondly, it will enable us to select very fast shutter speeds when taking action photographs. The use of a very wide lens aperture makes it possible to take pictures of certain subjicts in extremely poor light-even candlelight.
