Flowers are brightly colored so that they will attract insect. Some also have a sweet smelling liquid called nectar that attracts insects. Many flowers need insects to help them make seeds. When the insects come to drink the nectar they place pollen on the pistil, which is the part of a flower that makes seeds. If flowers were not beautiful and sweet smelling, the insects would not come. Pollen is carried to the pistil of flowers either by wind or by insects. Plants that are fertilized by the wind, such as rice, wheat and pine trees, have inconspicuous flowers as a rule. But plants that are fertilized by insects are usually very bright and filled with nectar to attract the insects. Yet insects see them quite differently than humans.
