Are There Traffic Rules for Ships?

Ships travel on the sea in shipping lanes. When traveling in these lanes, especially in narrow straits and near ports and harbors, there are traffic rules to make sure that ships so not bump into one another. These rules are the same everywhere in the world. When two ships are coming towards each other, both must move to the right. When a ship is crossing the path of another, the other turns and goes behind it. One ship may pass another on either side if it signals with its whistle. Ships traveling at night use lighthouses as guideposts.
