While babies are inside their mother they must get food through a long cord. When they're born the cord is cut since it is no longer needed. Cutting the cord leaves a little mark on their stomach. That is their bellybutton. When a baby is born, its umbilical cord is clamped off and cut. The stump that is left attached to the infant withers and drops off, leaving, the scar known as the navel. The umbilical cord is the baby's lifeline when it is in the womb. It connects the baby to the placenta of the mother and carries nourishment and oxygen from the placenta to the foetus and returns waste from the foetus to the placenta. Just after birth, the cord is removed because it is not longer needed.
