Do Moths and Butterflies Have Eyes on Their Wings?

Some moths have markings on their rear wings that look like large eyes. Usually the moth hides them, but when it's attacked the moth shows them to frighten the attacker. The eye like markings on some butterflies and moths are thought to have two purposes. One is to frighten away attackers. The other is to present false eyes to an enemy to lure it away from the true eyes. Birds are scared off by the large eye-shaped markings, but they will aim their attacks at the smaller markings, which serve to divert their attention away from the real eyes.
